Handwriting can be a fun thing to learn and practice each day!

We started homeschooling our daughter when she entered the 3rd grade. There was some adjusting to be done as we made the transition, but one thing we didn’t need to worry about right off the bat was the basics of reading and writing. My daughter, and first homeschool student, came to me with these essential skills already in place. And, with those skills, we could do and learn anything!

I knew the day would eventually come for our son to begin kindergarten. I would look in awe at other homeschool moms as they would explain their journey being the one to teach their kiddos to read and write. I was so eager to know how to teach writing in kindergarten!

As they explained these experiences in retrospect, it seemed like the magic of reading and writing just sort of happened over time and clicked when the child was ready. I’m sure in the middle of these experiences, there was some frustration and questioning, whether it be over the particular curriculum, teaching method, or just trying to assess the child’s readiness. But, the point I took home was that, like most milestones, given the opportunity to practice them (and with any special assistance they may need), they just click into place one magical day.

Making handwriting practice fun

That being said, we really try in our little classroom (as I am sure many homeschoolers and teachers do) to learn and practice new skills in fun and creative ways! In our search for some daily handwriting practice that would inspire our new kindergartner’s eagerness to learn, I created some daily handwriting practice worksheets (that easily combine into “journals”) that are so quick and easy to work into our day — and also something he really looks forward to working on!

These handwriting prompts are great for emerging writers as they are brief and only one sentence long. The majority of the sentence is in a dotted letter font to make for easy tracing. But, the end of the sentence is blank and the student fills it in on their own with the help of a word bank.

This is where it gets fun because the student can choose a word/s from the work bank to help them complete the sentence by copying what they see or they make up their own answer and writing it in. Above the writing space, there is an open area where the student can then draw and illustrate their sentence. How fun to share their answers and reasoning with the rest of the class as well!

Leveled and Themed Monthly Worksheets

There are two “levels” for these worksheets and 20 handwriting prompts for each month, for each level. For more beginner writers/readers, the word banks have four answer choices and corresponding picture clues to help them read what each choice is. For slightly more advanced writers/readers, the word bank has six different answer choices, but no picture clues (although there is still space for the student to add their own illustration).

To keep things fresh, each month has 3-4 themes that the writing prompts center around. Each monthly journal also has a cover (in color or black and white) that illustrates the monthly themes with plenty of space for students to color and personalize.

No prep, ready to print and go!

These worksheets are no prep, ready to go, and also serve as meaningful morning work or a journal students can keep at their desks for fast finishers! Each month also has FREE bonus pages where students can further practice their handwriting skills as they label different objects associated with that month’s theme.

We also offer a money-saving bundle of this resource featuring all writing prompts for all 12 months (that’s 480 total!) for over 20% OFF! Once you see how much your kiddos enjoy and look forward to completing these while effectively sharpening their writing, reading, and drawing skills, you’ll be so glad found these!
