A quick and easy Halloween treat idea with a Fall favorite — candy corn!

Candy Corn Cheesecake Mousse
The oohs and ahhs when these babies come to the table make them SO fun!

If you’re looking for some new Halloween treat ideas, you’ve come to the right place! This desert in a cup recipe is spooktacular!

Last year, when my daughter and I found out some friends were coming over for some pre-Halloween dinner and treats, we knew we had to find some fun Halloween dessert ideas. It, of course, had to be extra sweet and tasty to qualify as any sort of respectable Halloween-themed dessert!

Enter Candy Corn Cheesecake Mousse for dessert! It’s classic, creamy cheesecakey’ness (totally a real word) appeals to the adults and the fun candy corn colors spark a smile on any kid’s face! We found a fun recipe on Glorious Treats and got to work on making it a little more allergy friendly for us.

We dug out some cute vintage-looking juice glasses from the back of the cupboard to make these desserts that much more enticing! These are similar to what we used and would look great!

Combine that with being SO easy to make, NO baking, and the kids may even BEG to help make it, and it’s a clear winner!

When these hit the table after dinner, the kids came RUNNING from the other room when they spotted the fun colored layers and the adults eyes were just as big!

This recipe can be modified for ingredients that are safe for most allergies. As us allergy families know, just because the recipe ingredient doesn’t show your allergen in their ingredients, many of us are not comfortable serving said item to our loved ones until we also know it was not produced on shared lines with other allergens that might be of concern.

We obviously did this research for our family and I will share what ingredients we used, but, as always, it is important that you do this research for your own family and track down ingredients (or substitutes) that you feel comfortable with. Read more about our journey with food allergies.

The tricky allergen with this recipe is the dairy because, while I was able to find and use alternatives for the milk and whipped topping ingredients, I just have not found a dairy-free cream cheese that works quite the same. If you find something, we’d love to hear from you as this is one treat I cannot indulge in as I don’t consumer dairy (intolerance, not allergy).

Ingredients Details

  • Cream Cheese: As I stated above, this is one top 8 allergen-containing ingredient I just don’t have a substitute for yet. (Hugs to all of us avoiding dairy!)
  • Powdered Sugar: For our family’s peanut allergy, we use C&H or Imperial powdered sugar, but I am sure there are lots of other suitable brands.
  • Coconut Milk: We tend to use So Delicious coconut milk (the kind sold in a carton in the refrigerated section), but that’s just because we prefer it over regular milk for pretty much everything. If your family does dairy, you can use regular milk! Or, feel free to try your favorite milk that’s suitable for your allergy!
  • Vanilla: We strictly use McCormick vanilla as I’ve called their company in regards to this product sharing lines with peanut or tree nut ingredients and feel comfortable with them.
  • Whipped Topping: This is a tricky one. Despite the “uncrunchiness” of it, we used to use Cool Whip here and there, but nowadays, it does contain dairy. (This was before my son’s peanut allergy, so no idea if it’s safe for that.) Some other alternatives worth checking out include TruWhip, So Delicious Cocowhip, or even making your own to ensure it’s just what you need! This is a great recipe worth trying if you’re okay with coconut and the one we prefer to use the most!
  • Food Coloring: We use Americolor brand food coloring in our house (linked in the recipe) because they confirm on their website that there are no peanuts or tree nuts in their facility. (Yay for companies that offer straightforward and easy allergen FAQs on their websites!)
  • Candy Corn: We use Jelly Belly candy corn because, again, they confirm no peanuts or tree nuts! (Another company I want to hug for making the allergy-mom job easier!)

A quick and easy dessert with a Fall favorite — candy corn!

Ingredients

  • 8 oz cream cheese
  • ½ cup powdered sugar
  • ¼ cup carton coconut milk, not canned (or other suitable milk for your allergies)
  • 2 tsp vanilla
  • 8 oz allergy-friendly whipped topping (see Ingredients Notes section above for ideas)
  • orange and yellow food coloring (we use these)
  • candy corn for garnish (we use these)

Instructions

  • Empty cream cheese into a mixing bowl and beat with an electric mixer until fully smooth. Slowly beat in powdered sugar, coconut milk, and vanilla. Beat on medium-high speed for about 1 minute. Gently fold in thawed (not frozen) Cool Whip into mixture and gently stir until combined.
  • Separate cheesecake mousse equally into 3 prep bowls. 1/3 will remain white. Add food coloring to another 1/3 to make orange and to the final 1/3 to make yellow. Scoop each of the 3 colors into separate piping bags (or large Ziplock bags and cut off small piece of one of the bottom corners to create a piping bag).
  • Starting with yellow, squeeze a small layer of mousse into each dessert cup or bowl (clear glass or plastic cups/bowls will work best to show off your hard work) — we used glasses similar to these. Then, gently squeeze a small layer of orange into each cup/bowl. Finally, repeat with the white mousse.
  • Chill desserts for at least 30 minutes (or up to 1 day) before serving. Add a few candy corn candies to the tops before serving!
